The grading of a student’s performance in a Course Unit is done using Letter Grades and Grade Points (GPs) based on the overall percentage score of the student at the end of the semester.
The student’s overall performance during a given semester is measured using the Grade Point Average (GPA) based on the GPs for all the course units offered during that semester and the Credit Units (CUs) for each of the course units.
Furthermore, the overall performance or progress of a student at any time during a study program is measured using the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) computed from the GPAs obtained during the different semesters.
Lastly, the classification of the award is done based on the final CGPA at the end of the study program.
Let’s break down these in detail.
At the end of the semester, the overall percentage score shall be computed for every course unit. The score obtained shall then be graded using a Letter Grade, which shall carry the weight of the corresponding Grade Point (GP). The scale below shall be used.
| MARKS (%) | LETTER GRADE | GRADE POINT (GP) | PROGRESS |
| 95 – 100 | A+ | 5.0 | N.P |
| 90 – 94 | A | 4.7 | N.P |
| 85 – 89 | A- | 4.3 | N.P |
| 80 – 84 | B+ | 4.0 | N.P |
| 75 – 79 | B | 3.7 | N.P |
| 70 – 74 | B- | 3.3 | N.P |
| 65 – 69 | C+ | 3.0 | N.P |
| 60 – 64 | C | 2.7 | N.P |
| 55 – 59 | C- | 2.3 | N.P |
| 50 – 54 | D | 2.0 | Pass |
| 0 – 49 | F | 0.0 | Fail |
Where:
N.P = Normal Progress
A student who obtains a score below 50%, a Letter Grade of F or a Grade Point (GP) below 2.0 shall be considered to have failed that course unit. As a result, they will be required to retake that course unit in subsequent semesters.
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is the average of the Grade Points (GPs) a student earns in a single semester. It is calculated based on the weighted average of Grade Points per course unit offered during a given semester using the formula below:
Where:
For example;
Assuming a student offers three course units during a given semester with the following credit units and obtains the following grade points based on the marks obtained in the respective course units or modules;
Then the grade point average (GPA) for that semester will be calculated as follows:
$$ GPA = \frac{(3 \times 5) + (2 \times 4) + (3 \times 3)}{3 + 2 + 3} $$ $$ = \frac{32}{8} $$ $$ = 4.0 $$
CGPA is the cumulative average of GPA across multiple semesters and is calculated using the formula below.
Where:
For example;
Assuming a student obtains the following Credit Units in three semesters with the following total number of Credit Units for each of the semesters;
Then, the Cumulative Garde Point Average (CGPA) at the end of the three semesters will be calculated as follows:
$$ CGPA = \frac{(3.6 \times 20) + (3.8 \times 22) + (3.2 \times 18)}{20 + 22 + 18} $$ $$ = \frac{213.2}{60} $$ $$ = 3.55 $$
All qualifications awarded by San Institute, including Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees, will be classified based on the CGPA obtained by the student at the end of the study program and shall be based on the scale below.
A student who obtains a CGPA below 2.00 shall be considered to have failed and shall therefore not be eligible for graduation. As such, they will not receive an award for the study program (see minimum graduation requirements here).
| CGPA RANGE | CLASS OF AWARD |
| 4.40 – 5.00 | First Class |
| 3.60 – 4.39 | Second Class – Upper Division |
| 2.80 – 3.59 | Second Class – Lower Division |
| 2.00 – 2.79 | Pass |
| 0.00 – 1.99 | Fail |
