Academic Board (AB)

The institution has an Academic Board (AB) with the Principal as the Chairperson and Academic Registrar as the Secretary. The Academic Board is the main academic body of the institution and is responsible for all academic affairs of the institution.

Membership of the Academic Board

The Academic Board is composed of the following members:

  1. the Principal, who is the chairperson;
  2. the Deputy Principal who is the Vice-Chairperson;
  3. the Academic Registrar, who is the Secretary;
  4. the heads of department in each faculty;
  5. two members elected by the Academic Staff Association, one of whom must be a woman;
  6. such other members as the Academic Board may decide.

Powers and Functions

The Academic Board has the following powers, duties, and functions:

  1. Satisfying itself regarding the content and academic standard of any course of study in respect of any award of the Institution and reporting the same to the Governing Council;
  2. Initiating proposals relating to the conduct of the institution generally, and discussing any matter relating to the institution and to make submission to the Governing Council;
  3. Proposing regulations to be made by the Governing Council regarding the eligibility of persons for admission to any course of study provided by or under the supervision of the institution;
  4. Proposing regulations to be made by the Governing Council regarding the standard of proficiency to be gained in each examination for any award;
  5. Deciding which persons have reached the standard of proficiency referred to in paragraph (4) and fit for any award;
  6. Initiating, preparing, evaluating and submitting academic programmes for the institution.

Meetings

Unless the Board otherwise determines and subject to the provisions of the institution’s policy, meetings of the Academic Board are held at least once in three months at such place and time as the chairperson may appoint.

Every question before the Academic Board is decided by a simple majority of the members present and in case of an equality of votes, the person presiding has a casting vote.

The Board may also regulate its own procedure.
