Heads of Department (HoDs)

Heads of Department (HoDs) at San Institute of Computing, Management, and Information Science (SICMIS) provide academic, administrative, and operational leadership within their respective departments. They ensure effective delivery of academic programs, promote quality teaching and learning, and support innovation and research.

HoDs report directly to their respective School Deans and work closely with faculty, the Academic Registrar, and other administrative offices to ensure that departmental goals contribute to the achievement of the Institute’s Vision, Mission, and Core Values.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Heads of Department (HoDs)

The Heads of Department (HoDs) at San Institute of Computing, Management, and Information Science are responsible for the following:

1. Academic Leadership and Program Coordination

  • Provide leadership and supervision in the planning, development, and implementation of academic programs in the department.
  • Ensure effective delivery of lectures, practicals, assessments, and learning support activities.
  • Allocate teaching loads, prepare departmental timetables, and ensure adherence to academic schedules.
  • Promote high standards of professional ethics, discipline, and academic excellence among staff and students.

2. Curriculum Development and Quality Assurance

  • Lead curriculum review and improvement based on emerging trends and accreditation requirements.
  • Support implementation of quality assurance mechanisms including internal moderation and evaluation of courses.
  • Ensure compliance with National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) standards and institutional regulations.
  • Promote innovative teaching methodologies, including ICT-supported learning and blended instruction.

3. Staff Supervision and Professional Development

  • Supervise and mentor lecturers, assistant lecturers, and teaching assistants under the department.
  • Identify and recommend staff training, workshops, and professional development initiatives.
  • Coordinate staff performance evaluation and support continuous improvement.
  • Participate in recruitment, workload planning, and retention of qualified academic staff.

4. Student Academic Support and Guidance

  • Oversee academic advising, mentorship, and progress monitoring for students in the department.
  • Address student academic issues, grievances, and disciplinary matters in collaboration with relevant offices.
  • Encourage student participation in research, innovation, and academic competitions.
  • Ensure academic records are accurate, updated, and communicated appropriately.

5. Research, Innovation, and Community Engagement

  • Promote research activities and dissemination of scholarly work in the department.
  • Identify opportunities for collaborative research, partnerships, and grants.
  • Support community outreach programs aligned with the departmental field of study.
  • Encourage faculty involvement in conferences, publications, and professional associations.

6. Resource and Infrastructure Management

  • Manage departmental budgets, equipment, teaching aids, and learning materials efficiently.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and utilization of laboratories, studios, and other specialized facilities.
  • Submit resource requests and development proposals to the Dean for consideration.

7. Documentation, Reporting, and Records

  • Maintain updated department-level records including class lists, course outlines, and faculty workloads.
  • Prepare periodic departmental performance reports for submission to the Dean.
  • Document departmental meetings, resolutions, and follow-up action plans.

8. Policy Implementation and Governance Participation

  • Implement institutional policies, academic rules, and strategic initiatives at departmental level.
  • Participate actively in governance structures including departmental boards, School Boards, and Senate/Academic Board committees.
  • Contribute to accreditation, audits, and institutional planning processes.

9. Collaboration and Communication

  • Coordinate communication within the department and between administrative/academic units.
  • Liaise with industry partners to support internships, attachments, and practical learning.
  • Represent the department during official events, stakeholder meetings, and inter-institutional engagements.

In performing these responsibilities, Heads of Department ensure that academic programs are delivered efficiently, learners receive quality education, and staff are supported to excel professionally.
