The Assistant Director of the Center for Research and Innovation (CRI) provides operational and technical leadership in implementing San Institute’s research and innovation agenda. Working under the supervision of the Director of Engagement, Research, and Innovation, the Assistant Director ensures that the Center functions as a hub for research excellence, creativity, and technology-driven innovation. The role supports faculty, students, and external collaborators in conducting impactful research, developing innovative solutions, and advancing the Institute’s vision of being a Center of Academic and Professional Excellence in Computing, Research, and Innovation.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Assistant Director, Center for Research and Innovation (CRI)

1. Research Coordination and Implementation

  • Coordinate and oversee research projects, programs, and activities conducted within the Center.
  • Support the development and submission of research proposals and grant applications.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary research and collaborations across departments and external partners.
  • Monitor research progress and ensure timely delivery of outputs and reports.
  • Promote ethical research practices and compliance with institutional and national research policies.

2. Innovation and Technology Development

  • Lead initiatives that foster creativity, design thinking, and technological innovation among staff and students.
  • Manage the development of prototypes, software, and applied research projects.
  • Support intellectual property registration, patenting, and technology transfer processes.
  • Promote commercialization of research outputs and innovations with industry partners.
  • Identify opportunities for applied research aligned with national and global development priorities.

3. Research Infrastructure and Resource Management

  • Oversee the operations of research laboratories, workshops, and innovation spaces.
  • Ensure optimal utilization and maintenance of research and innovation facilities.
  • Support the procurement and management of research equipment, software, and materials.
  • Develop operational manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Center.

4. Capacity Building and Mentorship

  • Organize seminars, research colloquia, and workshops to strengthen research capacity.
  • Mentor students and early-career researchers in proposal writing, data analysis, and publication.
  • Facilitate training on research methodologies, innovation management, and technology commercialization.
  • Encourage participation in national and international research conferences.

5. Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with academia, industry, and government agencies.
  • Represent the Center in research networks, innovation clusters, and consortiums.
  • Coordinate joint projects and outreach programs that enhance visibility of the Institute’s innovation ecosystem.
  • Facilitate community-based research and technology-driven social impact initiatives.

6. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Develop indicators and performance metrics for monitoring research and innovation activities.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports on the Center’s performance, outputs, and challenges.
  • Track progress of ongoing research and innovation projects.
  • Provide data and insights for institutional reports to the Director ERI, Principal, and Governing Council.

7. Financial and Administrative Management

  • Assist in the preparation and management of the Center’s annual budget.
  • Oversee utilization of funds in compliance with institutional and donor requirements.
  • Manage contracts, project agreements, and partnership MoUs.
  • Support fundraising and resource mobilization for research and innovation programs.

8. Communication, Outreach and Visibility

  • Promote awareness of the Center’s programs, achievements, and opportunities.
  • Manage dissemination of research findings through publications, conferences, and exhibitions.
  • Maintain an up-to-date online and digital presence for the Center.
  • Organize innovation showcases, hackathons, and exhibitions in partnership with industry.

In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Assistant Director of the Center for Research and Innovation ensures the effective implementation of San Institute’s research and innovation agenda. The role translates institutional strategies into action by fostering creativity, collaboration, and technological advancement, thereby contributing to national and global development through research, innovation, and knowledge application.
